About this space

The Subterranean Lake is licensed for a maximum of 35 guests plus The Bride & Groom + 2 Registrars + a supervising member of staff

Set beside the crystal clear blue green lake 30 m diameter and 9.5 m deep this is truly a location with a difference in which to reflect on your exchange of vows. Accessed down a flight of 60 steps into a candle lit Cathedral chamber gives sufficient time to enjoy your entry music and make a grand entrance.

Candles are not obligatory and decorating is up to you, however a minimum of 500 (current record 1500) tea lights are very effective and give a wonderful ambience for your special ceremony!

Receptions could be arranged in the top Rum Store Cavern at an extra fee.

Meet the host

Caroline Richards

Since starting civil ceremonies at this space, Caroline, even though not a wedding planner, has personally overseen the arrangements both before and on the day. The personal touch she has given has been welcomed by brides and grooms, with many of them becoming friends returning to celebrate their anniversaries. She has managed hundreds of “traditional” ceremonies, however the only limit to what can be achieved within the space is your imagination. Caroline has helped to mastermind themed weddings from a “funky welly wedding” to a Viking ceremony; Medieval banquet with fire eaters; and even an Alice in Wonderland grotto.

House rules

This is a Heritage Slate Mine and under Mine Regulations safety helmets, even for the bride, must be worn to access the Lake.

No flash photography is allowed on account of the sleeping bats. This has not restricted professional photographers from obtaining some stunning images.

Stiletto heels are strongly advised against due to the uneven nature of the mine floor.

Otherwise just enjoy yourself!

This is the most beautiful and magical place I’ve ever seen and on October 12th I had the privilege of getting married here.

We loved the venue so much that we visited three times within 4 days.

Caroline and her family are amazing and were so grateful for their help in making our day so magical.
