Real Wedding – Sarah & Shaun’s ‘Whatever’ Wedding

Sarah & Shaun both knew they didn’t want a traditional wedding, it’s just not them!

Shaun works in television and sharing a love of movies meant that looking for a cinema as a wedding venue was a no brainer. Cue our Boutique cinemas and funky, flexible spaces !

With no real theme for the day as a whole and FUN being a prerequisite they chose to split the day into two, holding the ceremony and reception in the cinema then having a huge party at Gilwell Park.  This enabled them to really maximise the cinematic experience for their guests with elements of Gastby, Boho and Ibiza party.

The Proposal

Shaun and I met on Tinder in October 2014. Swiping right to our happily ever after!  Two years later, Shaun proposed at Kong, a roof top restaurant in Paris last April, the day after running the Paris marathon. Needless to say, after getting down on a sore knee, he struggled to get up again!

The Ceremony

We loved the intimacy of our venue.  The interior of the screening room had beautiful shades of blues and purples and we had a moon and stars back drop on the screen, which looked incredible. We liked the fact that I got to walk down an aisle in the middle of guests, as opposed to down the side which is what other cinemas had.

Our wedding tag line was ‘A little party never killed nobody’ and my dress was very Gatsby.  We even had famous movie photo booth props and sweet cones for the guests displayed in popcorn boxes around the mezzanine.

Our guests arrived by coach and walked passed a Lightbox displaying our names then up the red carpet into the building. Just like a movie premiere! Guests were greeted with popcorn and personalised cinema tickets as they entered the screening room. We had movie posters made up with our heads superimposed over classic love scenes displayed as they entered the cinema room. They were seated and our trailer began.

The short film was shot by good friend Dan Hagon who interviewed us about how we met etc. We then inserted famous film clips in between the interviews for comical effect  to help tell our story and even included a personalised version of the Star Wars opening crawl!

Once this finished, I walked in with my dad, preceded by my bridesmaids. Shaun and I then took to the stage with Jeannene, our celebrant, who conducted a humanist ceremony. Before the vows we had two readings; one by my Grandpa and the other by my good friend Mandy  We also had a “weddingoke” aka karaoke to Al Green “lets stay together’. We used a montage of photographs of friends and family as the background to the lyrics. Shaun and I then said our vows, which we wrote ourselves. Using the term ‘Always’ (Harry Potter) instead of ‘I do!”

After the ceremony all our guests went into the mezzanine for ‘pimped up’ prosecco and pizza.

The After Party

We chose Gilwell park for our after party because my Mum worked there before she sadly passed away. There is a memorial bench there dedicated to her.

The evening guests arrived at the same time as our ceremony guests so everyone heard the speeches together. We provided a Caribbean buffet and DJ.  Our first dance was to Chakka Khan ‘I feel for you’, however as this is hard to dance to, our friend recorded our own personal acoustic version which when then mixed into the original!

Notes on the venue

Once a garment factory, our space is a multi-faceted arts centre across five floors. We have several blank canvas spaces all under one roof – as well as an urban garden just outside – all of which can be decorated in keeping with your themes and ideas.
